PARP (Parents As Reading Partners)
|
|
Welcome to PARP 2012!! Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education! Studies have shown that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. The PARP (Parents As Reading Partners; note: The term ‘parents’ may be interpreted broadly to include all adults who play an important role in a child’s life) program encourages parents to participate in some type of reading experience with their children every day, thereby instilling strong reading habits. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words. PARP Goals: Ø Encourages reading at home to supplement school and library reading programs Ø Allows children to discover that reading can be fun as well as informative Ø Fortifies children’s reading habits Ø Strengthens student and family reading habits, while focusing on the enjoyment of reading Ø Develops and improves family relationships and communication Ø Brings parents and children closer together by sharing the pleasurable experience of reading together Ø Provides parents with information to help their children become better readers Ø Improves children’s creativity and well-being by limiting television viewing and increasing family closeness Ø Strengthens the bond between home, school and community This year’s PARP theme is “I Read, You Read, We All Read for Ice Cream!” FJC and JAE have been divided into four teams; Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Pistachio. The teams are competing to see who will read the most minutes during the two weeks of PARP. The team with the most minutes read will win a class ice-cream party! In addition to reading with your child each night there is a calendar of reading-related activities taking place at school. Your child will receive prizes or raffle tickets for their level of participation in the program. Enclosed in this packet you will find: - Reminder for PARP Kick-Off Event on January 27th at 7pm in the HS Auditorium
